Coming back from target today, with my mom and sister, my mom says she's interested in a decently loaded Subaru XV Crosstrek. I then laugh and comment that next summer, when the new WRX is out, it would make that Subaru worthless. She then procedes to rant at me, because "apparently, because she has driving experience, it means she knows practical vehicular performance experience." We proceed to argue for a few more minutes, and then I come to a stop light. She then thinks it's a good idea to say that she could outdrive me (if I was in a WRX) in an XV Crosstrek. I laugh, and start at the red light a bit faster than usual.

...now, here's the embarrassing part. As I clutch in, and shift in to 2nd, the shitty-ass shifter decides it doesn't want to go in to second, leaving me in neutral, and since my foot's on the gas, the engine guns to about 5000 rpm ( beginner's mistake, I know)
She proceeds to high five my sister, saying "HA ROOKIE MISTAKE!"

to top it all off, my self righteous sister says "ugh, you're such a cocky and unsafe driver! I'm never going in the car when you're driving!" She can't even drive stick, and she's commenting on my driving ability! grrrr...

How will the XV become obsolete? The new wrx won't be a 5-door, nor have near as much ground clearance (the reason for XV's), plus it's just plain funky. Sister wins again!

I don't know; I wouldn't be opposed to a Crosstrek. As much as I like WRX's, I liked the old one more. My neighbour has one, and he seems to get it stuck in snow...a lot (ground clearance).

My stock 850 gets stuck tons, too...damn Upstate winters and driveways

"Worthless" and "obsolete" have different meanings. By no means is it going to be an obsolete car, but for $25,000 would you rather have a freshly designed, new-to-the-market, 258hp performance sedan, or a 2-years-on-the-market, 148hp, squidgy raised wagon thing?
keep in mind, we don't even need an AWD car, since all we get is rain here, plus, we don't need the room of a wagon either!

Semantics, but ok, how will the XV become worthless? As you just articulated, they are very different, so one does not make the other worthless. I just really don't think the two will be commonly cross-shopped (xv also gets better mpg's, and you can get great deals on them). But honestly I would rather have neither. Used forester XT for me; Power+utility, but sadly no stick in the newer U.S. models :(

The performance capabilities of a WRX, with what my mom is most likely going to be using it (twisty back roads, open 2 lane highways with little traffic, and a short, relatively traffic free commute) outclass those of the XV's in this specific circumstance. It's worthless since there is a much better performing vehicle, that can accomplish the required purposes in an equivalently good, or better manner. This is why the XV crosstrek is in my opinion worthless in comparison!

And yeah, I agree, an XT's a great car!
a friend of mine has an '08 XT, and that thing hauls ass in the lower gears, where there isn't much turbo lag. Hers is a slushbox, though, so it's not as fun to drive, she says.

would love to, but I don't get to do that kind of stuff...
between school, and the car actually being hers, she doesn't let me drive around randomly.
That part comes when I get a/the car next summer!
